The week in review

So – things have been VERY BUSY around here, so I’m going to give you a picture of last week.

Saturday May 26 – Market & Eurovision Night!
In the morning, I visited the farmers’ market and figured out how to order cheese!! (Well, I asked to try some, and then admitted that I didn’t know how to order cheese, so the vendor explained it to me. But all in German!)
Then, in the evening, we went to Finnish M’s house to see the Eurovision finals! The singer from Sweden won (she was very good), but my favourites were the Russian grannies…:D

The Russian grannies! :-)

Sunday, May 27 – Everything Salad!
Work, and got together with E & P in the evening. We made a delicious salad – lettuce, ground beef, zucchini, CHEESE, tomatoes, onions…and of course, pumpkin seed oil…:-D Then we read Dr. Seuss and Robert Munsch and watched a movie.
Poppies on the way to E & P's.

The salad! Note the mustard (bottom left), cheese from the market (white packet) and maple syrup. Not necessarily salad additions, but good to have around anyway. :-)

Monday, May 28 – Turkish event!
We found out from E, quite unexpectedly, that there was a kind of festival in Lendplatz promoting Turkish culture! Lots of fooooood…and some interesting music and items on display.

"Did I drop something?" ;-) Sorry Tiny,
but I really couldn't find a good one of us...;-)

Tuesday, May 29 – In the downtown
I tacked on about 500 more words to my ever-lengthening climate change paper, practiced, and went on a shopping excursion in the old town with Tiny and E. We stopped for lunch at an Indian restaurant for an all-you-can-eat buffet…the butter chicken and naan bread was AMAZING!!!

Wednesday, May 30 – Locke and Hutton
Lots of classes today. Had three, but there was a very interesting discussion on John Locke’s ideas about knowledge in my morning philosophy class. In my “Wilderness and Eternity” course (mountain aesthetics), we heard about early developments in cartography, and saw some incredibly detailed scale models of the Alps. These were done in the 19th century – and it’s amazing how precise they became! Our prof also discussed James Hutton and the emergence of modern geology. Hutton was the first to propose uniformitarianism, a key principle in geology that states that all processes that operate in the world now are the same as any processes that have operated previously in the world’s history. This led to the discovery that the world is actually much older than was previously thought (before this, people assumed that the earth was only a few thousand years old).

Hutton’s evidence came from seeing an angular unconformity at Siccar Point in Scotland – a location where a person can observe geologic strata tilted in different directions, showing two very different time periods where sediment was deposited.

Thursday, May 31 – "Snow White and the Huntsman"
I did some more work in the lab and got some reading done before heading out to see the new take on Snow White: “Snow White and the Huntsman.” Beautiful visuals, but the love story left us all a little puzzled. Neither the Prince nor the Huntsman seemed to have much chemistry with Snow White…in fact, we thought they’d be much better off if they got together…;-)
I got Almdudler for the movie, of course. :D

Friday June 1 – More food
Ok, this IS getting embarrassing. I knew people said I had a food blog, but now I think it’s really hit home…I did some work in the morning, then went to my J.S. Mill class in the afternoon. Met a friend from the States, R, for coffee afterwards. Then Tiny and I went over to E & P’s for supper, where E’s sister J cooked a traditional Austrian meal. Chicken in mushroom sauce with mushrooms and onions, over pasta. Mmmm…then we saw “Valentine’s Day,” and witnessed Taylor Lautner actually refuse to take his shirt off in public!! Really! ;-)

Saturday June 2 – June Cleaning
I cleaned. All my loose papers. Recycled about a million. Now my desk is CLEAN…:D I also went to the mail to pick up a very exciting package. I may write more on this later, so stay tuned! J
